I have always loved to be different cos how else would you get noticed? The design world is filled with lots of talented individuals with amazing portfolios. Most designers i have been in touch with have either launched their portfolios on Behance, Dribbble, or their personal websites.

With research, i concluded that having a personal website or something close to it was the way to go. A multitude of people use Behance , and you could not create a case study on Dribbble using the basic subscription.

So i extended my research, i realized that notion was a thing and some people have created their portfolios using notion and they got hired. So i decided to use notion since i could not host a website or code one at the moment. Notion was the best way to go. In all of this, Youtube was a place of research and information finding.

I actually had to learn how to use Notion because it was a new software to me. Understanding it was simple enough.

I created 3 (three) case studies in Notion and shared with Senior designers i had as friends. I got averagely good responses. So i begun applying for junior positions but i never got a reply back. Not one. It felt strange cos i was trying to be different.

I love research and solution finding. So I asked people, felt pulses, realized and concluded that using the popular Behance might just be the best way to go as it would be what a recruiter would expect from a Junior designer.

Behance allows you to showcase both design shots (Simple design screens) and also full fledged case studies. So it gives a robust look to your profile making recruiters and those glancing through your portfolio have enough content to check through.

Thoughts on Behance over Notion

  1. It has a professionally build outlook that a large percentage of people are accustomed to unlike Notion that is easily customizable into a myriad of layouts (this could be a plus)

2. Ability to post design shots as well as full case studies — Behance makes everything look beautiful. The same cannot be said about notion as posting of single shots does not presently look as good.

3. Behance has a large user base — As of 2018, Behance had over 12 million users so it can be expected that many recruiter will be familiar with Behance. Its about the most popular platform to showcase ones portfolio so why not use it?

Will i still be using Notion?

Yes. Definitely. Notion is a powerful and its usage is wide and extensive. They also have great customer service cos i was once stuck while trying to fine tune some layouts and they reached out to help in good time.

I’ll still use notion to keep and document but i’ll definitely not be using it to showcase my design portfolio.

Selah!

Note — I’m still actively looking for design internship or Junior roles.

These are my views as i have used both platforms. Thank you.
